Haiti - 222nd Vertières : Message from the Consul in Santiago (DR) 19/11/2025 09:49:53
As part of the commemoration of the 222nd anniversary of the Battle of Vertières, Stephen Junior Cherenfant, Consul General of Haiti in Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic, delivered a message for the occasion, which we invite you to read and share. "Our ancestors accomplished the impossible. Facing the largest army of the time, they wrote one of the most glorious chapters in human history, under the visionary leadership of Jean-Jacques Dessalines. Today, despite the challenges facing our country, Vertières remains a landmark and a compass. It reminds us of where we come from: a people who do not give up; a people who rise again; a people who transform suffering into hope. It shows us where we must go : toward unity, solidarity, collective responsibility, and a profound love for our country. Here in the Dominican Republic, we have a duty to remain united, in solidarity, responsible, and proud of our identity. Together, let us protect our image, support our brothers and sisters, and show that the Haitian community is a community of values, peace, and hard work. Dear compatriots, dear friends of Haiti residing in Santiago and throughout the Cibao region. On this November 18th, we honor the Battle of Vertières, the final decisive battle that paved the way for Haiti's independence. Vertières is more than a historical event : it is a legacy, an inner strength, a flame of freedom that every Haitian still carries within them. As Head of Mission, I salute your dignity, your courage, and your perseverance. The Consulate remains committed to supporting you, listening to you, and defending your rights with respect and professionalism. On this November 18th, let's be brothers, let's be united, let's be in solidarity. May the spirit of Dessalines rekindle in us courage and love of country. Long live the legacy of Vertières! Long live the unity of the Haitian community in the Cibao region! Long live Haiti !" HL/ HaitiLibre
