Haiti - Health : MSF warns of the extent of sexual violence in Port-au-Prince (Report)

Médecin Sans Frontière (MSF) reveals in a January 2026 report that in the capital, Port-au-Prince, sexual violence has seen an alarming resurgence since 2021 and is now systematically used to terrorize the population. This situation is all the more dramatic as it occurs within a context of deteriorating infrastructure, particularly healthcare, and worsening living conditions.

The MSF report, "Sexual and Gender-Based Violence in Port-au-Prince" is based on 10 years of medical data and testimonies collected at the Pran Men'm clinic, established in 2015 and specializing in the care of victims of sexual violence. During this period, the clinic provided medical and psychosocial care to nearly 17,000 people, 98% of whom were women and girls.

“Since 2021, the number of victims of sexual violence treated at the clinic has almost tripled, rising from an average of 95 admissions per month in 2021 to more than 250 in 2025,” explains Diana Manilla Arroyo, MSF’s Head of Mission in Haiti. https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-45900-haiti-flash-at-least-3-200-rapes-in-8-months-situation-in-figures.html

MSF data shows that women and girls are targeted at all ages. Many have been displaced by armed violence in the city, making them more vulnerable to sexual violence. Nearly 20% of those treated at Pran Men’m have been assaulted multiple times.

Testimonies gathered at Pran Men’m reveal increasingly brutal attacks. Since 2022, 57% of patients reported being assaulted by members of armed groups, often in the context of gang rapes. More than one hundred victims of sexual violence reported being attacked by ten or more rapists during these gang attacks.

The report highlights persistent shortcomings in the availability of services necessary for the care of victims of sexual violence. MSF is often unable to refer them to essential services, such as shelters or financial support.

Fear of stigmatization, financial hardship, insecurity, and a lack of access to information hinder access to care for victims of sexual violence. Since 2022, only a third of women have arrived at the Pran Men’m clinic within three days of their assault, the window of opportunity to prevent HIV transmission. Furthermore, 59% of patients were unable to arrive within five days, thus failing to prevent unwanted pregnancies.

“We call for a sustained increase in funding for support services to guarantee free access to comprehensive medical and psychosocial care for survivors of sexual violence. We also call for the unequivocal recognition of the widespread nature of sexual violence and its deliberate use by armed groups as a tool for controlling and subjugating women and girls,” concludes Diana Manilla Arroyo.
