Haiti - Environment : 553 Earthquakes Recorded in Haiti in 2025

The Ministry of the Environment, the Bureau of Mines and Energy (BME), and the Technical Unit of Seismology (UTS) have published Haiti's seismic activity report for the year 2025. The data comes from local networks (Ayiti-séismes and UTS) as well as regional networks in Cuba, Jamaica, and the Dominican Republic.

Quantity, Magnitude, and Depth of Earthquakes :

Number of Earthquakes :

553 earthquakes were recorded in 2025, representing a 12% decrease compared to the 628 earthquakes in 2024.

Monthly Frequency :

The average was 46 earthquakes per month. The most active months were May and August, with 60 earthquakes each.

Magnitudes :

Between 0.2 and 4.2. 503 earthquakes (90.9%) had a magnitude of 3 or less (very minor). 9% (50 earthquakes) were between 3.1 and 4.2 (minor to slight). The strongest earthquake (magnitude 4.2) occurred on Saturday, August 23, off the coast of Jean Rabel (Northwest) https ://www.haitilibre.com/article-45620-haiti-flash-seisme-de-42-au-large-de-l-ile-de-la-tortue.html.

Offshore Earthquakes :

Approximately 206 earthquakes (37.25%) occurred offshore, particularly around the Northwest Peninsula.

Depth :

263 earthquakes (47.5%) were shallow (depth ≤ 10 km), making them more noticeable at the surface.

Geographical Distribution by Department :

Seismic activity is unevenly distributed across the ten departments :

West : 138 quakes (24.9%).

Nippes : 115 quakes (20.7%).

Northwest : 102 quakes (18.4%).

Southeast : 79 quakes.

South : 40 quakes.

Grande Anse : 24 quakes.

Artibonite : 24 quakes.

Center : 13 quakes.

North : 12 quakes.

Northeast : 6 quakes.

The West, Nippes, and Northwest departments alone account for 64% of the annual activity.

The least affected departments were the Center, North, and Northeast, which experienced only 31 quakes out of a total of 553, or 5.6%.
