Haiti - Leisure : Did you know ? #5

Quiz.HaitiLibre presents a series of short general knowledge articles entitled "Did You Know?". Today we ask you if you know what a "pigging station" is...

Did you know that pipelines are the arteries of land-based oil transportation, but they require constant maintenance to prevent corrosion and blockages.

To do this, operators use a device called pig (Pipeline Inspection Gauge/Gadget). This device is inserted into the pipeline and pushed by the pressure of the oil flow.

The stations are the entry and exit points for these machines. There are cleaning scrapers that scrub the walls to remove paraffin or sediment deposits, and “smart scrapers” equipped with electronic sensors. These scan the thickness of the metal and detect micro-cracks or points of internal corrosion without interrupting the flow.

This technology is vital for environmental safety because it can anticipate pipe ruptures before a leak occurs. It is a perfect example of the invisible high technology that ensures the integrity of the world's energy infrastructure over thousands of kilometers.
