Haiti - Education : The Minister of Education shared his priorities with the IDB and the Global Partnership for Education

Vijonet Déméro, the new Minister of National Education, shared his priorities last week with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) during two separate meetings.

During his meeting with the IDB, Minister Déméro outlined his administration's main priorities, which include : improving the quality of teaching and learning; improving access to education for all; strengthening vocational training; rehabilitating public schools; providing initial and ongoing teacher training; and developing technical and vocational training.

Within this strategic framework, the Minister mentioned several initiatives that will focus on decentralizing the management of the education system; digitizing services, notably through the establishment of the Institute for Digital Education (which will be dedicated to training Ministry staff and teachers); and improving teaching conditions. Capacity building for Technical Directorates and Departmental Directorates of Education (DDEs); optimization of the use of the Education Management Information System (SIGE); implementation of the DDE management manual; the management manual and code of ethics for high schools; strengthening the organizational capacity of the Inspectorate General; early childhood development; creation of a working group on career guidance; expansion of the use of the "Single Textbook"; curriculum reform; promotion of economic and financial education; civic engagement and the promotion of mind games...

Corinne Cathala, the IDB Resident Representative in Haiti, expressed her appreciation for the Minister's clearly articulated vision. She assured him that the IDB technical team and the Ministry's Project Coordination Unit would explore how they could assist in the implementation of some of these initiatives.

The technicians from the IDB office in Haiti, responsible for the education portfolio, reported significant results achieved through interventions in the country over the past three years, thanks to collaborative work with the Ministry's Project Coordination Unit (PCU). They also discussed activities that could be planned for the next two years, following the guidelines set by the highest education authorities.

Shortly afterward, the Minister held a second meeting with the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) regarding the intervention mechanism in Haiti.

Mohamed Yassine, education expert for the GPE, and Hervé Boursiquot, Director General of the National Office for Education Partnership (ONAPE), emphasized the importance of this financial support and the need to revitalize the Local Education Partnership Group in Haiti (GLPEH) and the Education Sector Group (GSE), two consultative and consensus-building platforms focused on key actions to prioritize in the education sector.

Professor Ecclésiaste Télémaque, Chief of Staff to the Minister of National Education, the Coordinator of the DDEs, Jean Wilnor Pierre, the Coordinator of the UCP, Louis Fritz Dorminvil, assisted by Jacksonn Joseph, the Education Coordinator for the IDB in Haiti, Marie Evane Tamagnan, and Sidney Vasconcelos and Jeff Schleiden Colo, co-managers of the IDB education portfolio in Haiti, participated in these two meetings.
