Monitoring of rural road rehabilitation works in the Far North of Haiti 14/04/2026 09:31:20
Marcelin Aubourg, the Minister of Agriculture on tour in the Far North at the head of a delegation, led a series of visits to follow the progress of the rehabilitation work on several rural roads as part of the Support Program for the Improvement of Rural Infrastructure for Access to Markets (PAPAIR) financed jointly by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Haitian State. The ministerial delegation went in particular to Sainte-Suzanne, in the North-East, to inspect two sections deemed to be priorities : Sainte-Suzanne/Sarazin and Sainte-Suzanne/Foulon, representing more than 14 km of rural roads. On the Sainte-Suzanne/Sarazin segment, the work carried out includes 900 meters of stripping and earthworks, 60 meters of retaining wall and 50 meters of hydraulic concrete roadway, aimed at securing sloping areas and facilitating traffic. Concerning the Sainte-Suzanne/Foulon section, the interventions concern the construction of 31 meters of retaining wall and the installation of four drainage structures, including two culverts and two box culverts, essential for the sustainability of the road infrastructure in the face of runoff water. Continuing his tour in the North department, the Minister visited the construction site of the Carrefour Lory/Bakiny section, 8.6 km long, located in the communes of Milot and Plaine du Nord. This project is among the most advanced in the region. The achievements include, among others, the rehabilitation of the Secap culvert, the construction of a double-cell culvert in Pake, the development of 750 meters of masonry ditches, the installation of four access footbridges, the construction of 153 linear meters of hydraulic concrete roadway and the construction of gabion protection walls totaling 200 m³. Furthermore, the earthworks have been completed and 7 km of dirt roadway have already been rehabilitated. At the end of his tour, Minister Aubourg underlined the importance of the rehabilitation of rural roads in national agricultural policy. This work makes it possible to reduce logistics costs, facilitate the sale of agricultural products, reduce post-harvest losses and strengthen the economic resilience of rural communities.
