Haiti celebrates 70 years of Haitian-Japanese diplomatic relations 29/04/2026 09:48:52
On Tuesday, April 28, 2026, at the Montana Hotel, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs celebrated the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Haiti and Japan, in the presence of Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, Foreign Minister Raina Forbin, and Kazuhiko Nishiuchi, Ambassador of Japan to Haiti. In his address, the Prime Minister paid tribute to the strength of Haitian-Japanese relations, based on mutual respect and cooperation, which have united the two nations since the official resumption of their relations in 1956. He reaffirmed the Government's commitment to deepening the political, economic, and cultural dimensions of these relations. In this regard, he called for increased mobilization of the private sectors of both countries around structuring public-private partnerships capable of fully leveraging opportunities for cooperation. For her part, Raina Forbin highlighted the quality of the partnership between the two countries, particularly in the context of efforts to restore security, while emphasizing the importance of pursuing cooperation focused on development, innovation, and capacity building. She called for more dynamic cooperation, capable of meeting the legitimate aspirations of both peoples and actively contributing to regional and international stability. Louis Harold Joseph, Haiti’s Ambassador to Japan, spoke online. He praised the longevity of the diplomatic relationship as a model of mutual respect despite geographical distances. He expressed the Haitian people’s profound gratitude for Japan’s unwavering support, especially in the areas of education, health, and infrastructure development, while also calling for an expansion of cultural and economic exchanges. Finally, the Ambassador reiterated Haiti’s commitment to working alongside Japan for regional and global stability, emphasizing that this platinum jubilee marks the beginning of a new chapter in strategic partnership. Japanese Ambassador to Haiti Kazuhiko Nishiuchi reiterated Japan's unwavering commitment to Haiti and its determination to continue supporting the country in its efforts toward stabilization and sustainable development. "On the sidelines of the ceremony, a Memorandum of Understanding on diplomatic training was signed by Haitian Foreign Minister Raina Forbin and Toshimitsu Motegi, representing her Japanese counterpart.
