Haiti - Reconstruction : The State comes to the aid of infrastructure in the Southeast

Following a strategic assessment tour of the Palmes region, Joseph Almathe Pierre Louis, the Minister of Public Works, is intensifying his field operations and visited the Southeast department this week.

The first highlight of this visit was the Gaillard hydroelectric power plant, located in Cayes-Jacmel. Noting with concern that this vital infrastructure has been out of service for approximately a year, Minister Pierre Louis recognized the urgency of the situation. In line with the government's priorities, which place particular emphasis on energy independence, technical solutions will be closely examined to rehabilitate the plant as quickly as possible and restore local power generation capacity.

The ministerial delegation then visited Bassin Caïman, a highly strategic hydrographic site where three major rivers converge: the Rivière Gauche, the Rivière Gosseline, and the Grande Rivière. It was at this very location that a significant portion of the national highway was washed away during the last cyclone. On site, the Minister assessed the gabion construction work currently underway.

Faced with climate challenges, the Ministry, supported by the Prime Minister's Office, is not content with superficial solutions. In the very short term, the priority will be to undertake the immediate correction of the riverbeds at risk through intensive operations involving embankments, dredging, and bank protection to prevent flooding as the hurricane season approaches, beginning on June 1st.

In the medium term, efforts will focus on the fundamental treatment and structural development of watersheds, ensuring the long-term protection of lives and property.

This series of visits to several geographic departments across the country provided the Minister with an opportunity to gain a closer understanding of local realities and to engage directly with residents.
