Haiti - Elections : The Prime Minister's Office approves an electoral budget cut in half

On Friday, July 3rd, 2026, the Prime Minister's Office and the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) announced that, following several working sessions, the two institutions had reached an agreement on the budget to finance the electoral operations.

These discussions, conducted under the authority of the Prime Minister and the President of the Provisional Electoral Council, benefited from the technical support of teams from the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF), who carried out a thorough review of the various components of the electoral budget.

This assessment was based on realistic assumptions, taking into account, in particular, the logistical and organizational requirements of the election, the gradual improvement of the security environment and the resumption of traffic in certain areas currently difficult to access, as well as the State's financial capacity and the principles of sound public financial management.

At the conclusion of these discussions, the Prime Minister's Office and the Provisional Electoral Council jointly agreed on an amount of one hundred and twenty million USD (120,000,000) for the implementation of electoral operations. This budget may be revised, if necessary, by a joint decision of the two institutions. It should be noted that the initial preliminary budget submitted was 250 million USD (https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-47170-zapping-haiti-of-march-28-2026.html), and a revised version, prepared by a Commission composed of representatives from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), and the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH), was proposed to reassess the electoral operations budget, with a proposed budget between 220 and 230 million USD.

This agreement constitutes a crucial step in the preparation for the upcoming elections. The Government reaffirms its commitment to mobilizing, within the limits of the State's capacity and with the support of its national and international partners, the necessary resources to ensure the financing of the various phases of the electoral process.

For its part, the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) renews its determination to implement this process impartially, professionally, and independently, in strict compliance with the constitutional and legal framework as well as international standards for organizing elections.
