Quiz.HaitiLibre offers a twice-weekly general knowledge segment called "Did You Know ?". Today, we ask you which livestock is traditionally considered the "bank" of the Haitian farmer ?
Did you know that in Haiti, goat breeding, often called “kabrit”, plays a vital socio-economic role in rural areas.
For many farming families, the goat represents a living savings, a real living “bank” that can be sold quickly to meet unforeseen expenses such as school fees or health care.
This animal is particularly adapted to the Haitian climate and steep terrain, requiring little initial investment compared to cattle. Goat meat is extremely popular in local gastronomy, particularly for the national dish “tasso”.
Despite its resilience, this breeding requires rigorous management to avoid overgrazing which contributes to environmental degradation. Encouraging more modern and sustainable breeding techniques makes it possible to protect this essential financial resource while preserving the fragile ecosystems of the Haitian mountains, thus ensuring the economic survival of households.
