Haiti - Insecurity : A true national tragedy

In a press release, the Order of Human Rights Defenders (ORDEDH) reveals that "Data collected between January 1st and June 30, 2026, paints a picture of a true national tragedy. In the space of six months, at least 1,305 people were violently killed throughout the country. This represents an unbearable average of 217.5 deaths per month, or more than seven lives shattered every day. A total of 408 major security incidents were recorded during this period. Violence is affecting the entire country, but its concentration is particularly devastating in two areas suffocating under terror : the West Department and the Artibonite Department."

It is now essential to listen to the suffering of the people and the distress of officers in the field. This is why "we demand the immediate creation of a restructuring commission within the Haitian National Police (PNH) in place of an acting Director General. This body must listen to the police, take into account their legitimate demands and their lists of grievances, while also addressing the public's complaints and expectations regarding the conduct of the national police. But the Haitian National Police (PNH) cannot succeed alone. To achieve real results and restore citizens' confidence, synergy must be immediately developed between the PNH, the Armed Forces of Haiti, and the FRG (Gendarmerie Reform Force). Only through this union of forces and tactical intelligence can the territory be liberated."

This unbearable security crisis is unfolding under the governance of de facto Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, who has led the country for approximately 20 months, with the priority mandate of restoring peace and organizing general elections. While the Provisional Electoral Council has just published the electoral calendar, setting the first round for December 13, 2026, one thing is clear: no election will be credible or even humanly possible if security and respect for life are not urgently restored in Haiti.
