In the communal section of Baquet, Arnaud, in the Nippes department, the Ministry of Agriculture—through the Resilient Agriculture for Food Security Project (PARSA)—is working to improve travel conditions for rural residents and facilitate the transport of agricultural produce to the region's main markets.

The stretch of rural road connecting Carrefour Azor to Chalumeau, via Morne Katina, is currently undergoing rehabilitation as part of this initiative. The sub-project includes the construction of 200 linear meters of concrete wheel tracks, a 59.28-meter-long ford crossing, and an 84-meter-long protective low wall, as well as the re-profiling of approximately 800 linear meters of the road. Work on the drainage ditches along the affected section has already been completed.

This road is a vital link for local mobility and the transport of agricultural produce. It notably facilitates access to the Gros-Bassin market—a major regional commercial hub—as well as to other nearby markets. Rehabilitating this route reduces transport-related difficulties and limits post-harvest losses. Furthermore, it allows residents to bypass the Grande Rivière des Nippes, the crossing of which previously posed a significant obstacle to travel.

Before the work was carried out, travel conditions on this stretch became particularly difficult during the rainy season. Road surface deterioration, combined with an inadequate drainage system, led to mud formation and the accumulation of stagnant water. In some areas, the passage of motorcycles and other forms of transport became extremely difficult, if not impossible.

The rehabilitation of this rural road is therefore a significant undertaking for the community. The construction of concrete wheel tracks, a ford crossing, a protective low wall, and drainage structures, along with the re-profiling of the track, should help improve the movement of people and goods while strengthening the infrastructure's resilience against rainfall and harsh environmental conditions.

Beyond improving mobility, this infrastructure plays a vital role in boosting local agricultural activities. A more accessible track allows beneficiaries to transport their harvests to markets more easily, facilitates the supply of rural areas, and helps bridge the gap between production zones and commercial distribution channels.

Better-developed rural infrastructure means improved access to markets and essential services. It thus represents an investment in both community mobility and the local economy.

Through PARSA, the Ministry continues its efforts to develop rural infrastructure and strengthen the resilience of farming communities. These investments are part of an approach aimed at improving production and marketing conditions, facilitating the transport of agricultural products from production zones to markets and storage facilities, and reducing post-harvest losses.
