Haiti - Environment : Strengthening climate resilience and restoring degraded ecosystems

On October 12, 2026, as part of efforts to strengthen climate resilience and restore degraded ecosystems, a technical delegation from the Ministry of the Environment (MdE) and Heifer International conducted a study mission to the Dosmond Nursery Center in Ouanaminthe. The purpose of this visit was to examine the operation of the experimental nursery and assess the potential for adapting this model to the restoration needs of the Trois-Rivières watershed.

This initiative is part of the implementation of the project "Improving Climate Resilience in the Trois-Rivières Region of Haiti through Integrated Flood Management," funded by the Green Climate Fund (GCF). Implemented in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), with Heifer International participating in certain activities, this eight-year project includes restoration interventions on more than 25,000 hectares in the Trois-Rivières watershed.

During their visit, the technicians examined the main components of the Dosmond Nursery Center, including production facilities, germination tables, seedling development areas, and shade structures. The assessment also focused on the infrastructure organization and technical practices that could be adapted for establishing nurseries in the project's intervention areas.

The goal is to develop local production capacity for forest, fruit, and agroforestry seedlings to support reforestation efforts, soil protection, and the restoration of degraded ecosystems. These interventions should also contribute to improved watershed management and a gradual reduction of environmental vulnerabilities that exacerbate flood risks.

Particular attention is being paid to the participation of local communities in the establishment, operation, and management of future nurseries. This approach aligns with the guidelines of the National Community Reforestation Strategy, officially launched on September 17, 2026, by the Ministry of the Environment, in conjunction with the Ministry of Agriculture https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-48471-launch-of-the-national-community-reforestation-strategy-in-haiti.html

By prioritizing skills transfer, the sharing of best practices, and community involvement, this approach aims to integrate ecological restoration activities into a sustainable dynamic, capable of generating local economic opportunities while strengthening the protection of natural resources.

The Dosmond mission is a preparatory step in identifying technical and organizational solutions that can support future interventions in the Trois-Rivières watershed. The lessons learned from this mission can help guide decisions regarding the development and management of the nurseries planned within the project.

Through this initiative, the Ministry of the Environment, with the support of its partners, is continuing its efforts to promote integrated watershed management, combining landscape restoration, climate risk reduction, agroforestry development, and community participation.
