Haiti - Social : The market of Tabarre goes up in smoke

Me Thierry Mayard-Paul, the Minister of Interior and Territorial Collectivities, deplores the fire occurred at the Public Market of Tabarre on the evening of February 24 to 25, 2012. This fire devastated the concrete warehouses and the north wall of the Market. According to a first observation, all goods [clothing, shoes, cosmetics, etc...] of merchants went up in smoke, causing losses estimated at several million gourdes.

"The damage is enormous, but we have not yet been able to balance [...]," declared Nadia Lochard, Local Director of Civil Protection who rejoices that there is no victim.

A delegation from the Ministry of the Interior composed of Jean Fritz Jean-Louis, Secretary of State for Collectivities, of Director of Collectivities, Michelet Mondestin and members of the Cabinet of Minister, visited the site immediately to assess the damage and consider immediate solutions.

The Minister of the Interior has recommended the formation of a Commission of Inquiry to determine the origins of the accident, identify the number of merchants victims and the number of warehouses and tents destroyed for a comprehensive assessment of losses. In the same vein he has, together with the Minister of Commerce, Wilson Laleau, proposed on Monday a meeting with the mayors to form a tri sectorial entity, which, according Mayard Paul, will help to prevent and deal with such events.

The President Michel Martelly, whose the Primer Minister who has just resigned, went to the scene Saturday morning.
