Haiti - Agriculture : «Everybody comes with its own flag and wants to do something...»

The Brazilian José Graziano da Silva, Director-General of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), on the sidelines of the XXXII Regional Conference of this organization, which was held last week in Buenos Aires in Argentina, attended by 18 ministers and 37 vice-ministers from 32 countries in the region, called on participants to support Haiti "To rebuild the country [...] it is necessary to start from food security [...] rebuild its production capacity to implement a program of medium and long term to ensure peace in the region," adding that "where there is no bread, there is no security." In this regard, he noted that "the increase in food production and the supply is essential for eradicating hunger."

He also indicated that the participants countries recognized that the situation in Haiti was not a question of resources "the necessary resources are clearly there, but Haiti is perhaps the example of the difficulties of coordination of emergency programs [...] Everyone comes with its own flag and wants to do something, but their contributions to not make the difference..." In this regard, he recognized the "responsibility" of the FAO, of other UN agencies and the Organization of American States (OAS), in their "lack of coordination" to address food aid policies in Haiti.
