Haiti - Economy : $250 million to convert waste into renewable energy

The Haitian government on Thursday signed a partnership agreement with the International Electric Power Company for the construction of a plant to convert domestic wastes and the production of 30 megawatts of renewable electricity, for Port-au-Prince and the metropolitan area. This plant will be located 18 km from Port-au-Prince.

Karl Jean Louis Director of Investment Facilitation Center (IFC) explained "we presented an investor [International Electric Power Company] who wants to enter in the field of energy, which will invest $ 250 million in this sector, it is the Phoenix project. They signed a contract with the Haitian government and the project will begin soon, they will collect household waste, and convert them into energy and they will do with a Haitian partner 'Boucard Pest Control' [...] the Haitian government has already given his contribution, he donated a land [160 hectares] to install the plant [...] the team will return shortly to take all logistics measures to provide this service to the population [...] Phoenix will collect waste in municipalities and convert them into electricity. They'll sell this energy and create jobs in the collection, processing and other related services that this firm will provide in the metropolitan area, 2,000 jobs will be created directly [...]"
