Haiti - Social : Important work of access to drinking water in the Artibonite

To facilitate access to safe drinking water to a larger number of the population, particularly in rural areas, the National Directorate of Water Supply and Sanitation (DINEPA) performs important work in the department of Artibonite : installation of 3 Water Treatment Stations (WTS) type "hydro pur", he rehabilitation of 30 WTS and the establishment of 33 Water Point Committees (CPE).

50,000 people from 33 localities in five municipalities in the Artibonite Department, will benefit from this work aimed at improving access to safe water and sanitation.

Concerning the drinking water, the results are already highly appreciated. Three stations are installed and 27 others are now repaired and functional, thanks to funding from the Spanish Agency for International Development (AECI) and the Interamerican Development Bank (IDB).

The new stations, are installed in the 3 localities of Gilbert, Hatte-Chevreau and Chevreau des Cloches. For these three zones, the installation of treatment plants of water, allows to about 8,000 families to have access to potable water service. Depending the technology used, each stationis composed of an upper reservoir in hot galvanized steel, of a lower stainless steel reservoir with lid, of a cylindrical tank with filter loads of 0.80m diameter by 2.20 m in height, of eight taps for dispensing and a solar pump with a flow rate of 1.000 liters per hour.

These stations whose operating time per day is 8 hours, use very little labor, what explains that a single operator can easily manage it and do routine maintenance. The WTS function using a conventional treatment (Flocculation, chlorination and filtration, without additional power source). We should also note the low cost of drinking water : two gourds "bokit" (5 gallons).
