Haiti - Social : Family planning, an individual right to promote

Last week, the Ministry of Public Health and Population (MSPP) and the UN Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA) organized a workshop on the theme of "family planning, an individual right to promote", one hundred personalities participated in this workshop include: Dr. Florence D. Guillaume the Haitian Minister of Health, the Vice-President of the Senate Commission on Health, representatives of PAHO-WHO and UNFPA.

According to Minister Florence D. Guillaume "this workshop was to analyze family planning in the perspective of a control of the population growth in Haiti. She said that she was convinced that family planning could help the fight against poverty and that it will allow to achieve an appropriate balance between population growth and available resources [...] Today, family planning should be seen as the culmination of a real plea for a mobilization of all stakeholders in the health and development." Dr. Jackie Gernay, PAHO Representative in Haiti indicated that family planning was not only to avoid having children, but also prevent pregnancies among young people, fight against Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) and reduce the maternal mortality rate. She asked on this subject, all stakeholders to join the MSPP to ensure an integrated family planning, free and accessible to all. Dr. Ramiz Alakbarov, UNFPA Representative reiterated the commitment of his institution, to ensure universal access to reproductive health services.
