Haiti - Economy : Muhammad Yunus announces the funding of several projects in Haiti

Muhammad Yunus, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, International Expert in economic development and co-President of the Presidential Advisory Council on Investment (PACI) today completed a visit of three days in Haiti, his second trip to Haiti, where last year, he came to present his economic model of "social business", which consists in creating business that reinvest their profits in social areas, to help the populations.

Muhammad Yunus is the founder [in 1977], of the "Grameen Bank" in Bangladesh, which allowed since, to nearly 300 million entrepreneurs around the world (too poor to qualify for traditional bank loans) to benefit directly or indirectly of micro-credits.

Saturday, during his first day in Haiti, Muhammad Yunus, during a conference at the Hotel Montana, announced that his group of business development, will fund several projects in the country. They are two poultry farms, a plantation of shrubs and trees of jatropha for use in the production of alternative fuel biodiesel, a bakery and a fish farm of tilapia.

The investment in each of these projects varies from 80,000 to 500,000 dollars [mixture of loans and equity]. "Haiti and Bangladesh (Yunus country) have common characteristics in terms of opportunities to be exploited by social entrepreneurs," declared the economist on this occasion.

Yunus also plans to launch a national competition of social entrepreneurship for university students before leaving the country on Monday.
