Haiti - Education : 685.000 more students this year, in school canteens

As part of the project to support school canteens of World Food Programme (WFP), 685,000 more students, in 2,000 Haitian schools will have access this year, to a hot meal, during the five days of class.

"Anything done by WFP in school canteens, is part of its support to education, since the objective of WFP is to enable the child to receive the bread of instruction," explained Suze Percy Filippini, special Advisor to the WFP.

This year, the school feeding program of WFP is intended primarily for children in the most vulnerable areas of the country that have suffered drought and Tropical Storm Isaac. The municipalities of La Gonâve, Ganthier, Gressier, Grand-Goâve and Carrefour, in the department of the West, of Gonâve and of Anse-Rouge in the Artibonite, of Baie-de-Henne, of Môle-Saint-Nicolas and of the Tortue in the Northwest are among the beneficiaries.

The project also aims to encourage local production. WFP supports in particular the production of milk "Lèt Agogo", with the objective of providing two bottles of milk per week to each student. WFP also buys rice from farmers in the Artibonite and of Torbeck in the Southern Department, even if the majority of rice served to children, is currently provided by donors such as the United States, Canada, France and Brazil.
