Haiti - Economy : EU finance the modernization of border crossings

The Directors of Customs Fernando Fernández of the Dominican Republic and Jean Baptiste Fresnel of the Republic of Haiti, announced in Santo Domingo at the worktable on customs issues, in the presence of representatives of the European Union in the Dominican Republic, Humberto Cristian Pérez and Escipión Oliveira, that the two countries, will execute a project to modernize customs office on the border, funded to the tune of 2 million euros by the European Union.

These works, should be completed by January 8, 2013, are part of the binational program, which included among others the construction of customs facilities in Dajabón and Juana Méndez. This program also covers the implementation of roads and other structures that contribute to increased trade between the two neighboring Nations.

In order to accelerate the process and ensure compliance with safety standards of world trade and of the World Customs Organization (WCO), a committee was formed, composed of sub-technical directors of the General Directorate of Customs Dominican (DGA) Eduardo Rodríguez ; of the technology, Heriberto Minaya and Haitian customs experts, Eugène Reynald and Benjamín Ronald.

Jean Baptiste Fresnel participated in the meeting at the invitation of his counterpart of the Dominican Repuplic, to open a joint work agenda centered on the exchange of technical expertise and experience in the modernization of customs services at the borders.
