Haiti - Economy : Economic Indicators Q4

In its report concerning the fourth quarter of 2012 (Q4) (July to September), the Haitian Institute of Statistics and Informatics (IHSI) indicates an increase of 2.0% in the index of industrial production YoY and 5.0% compared the previous quarter. The quarterly increase was due to the positive results achieved by the branches of activity such as textiles (+2.7%), publishing and printing (6.0%), chemicals (+26.3%) and non-metallic mineral products (+4.5%). By cons, food products (-0.8%) and basic metal works (-13.5%) declined.

ENERGY :

Significant increase of 17.6% of the index of the power generation YOY and decrease of 1.5% over the previous quarter. This quarterly variation negative is the combined result of a decrease of 7.7% of the hydroelectric production and a slight increase of 0.3% of thermal generation. Billed consumption, for its part, reflected an upward trend (5.2%) compared to the previous quarter. However, on an annual basis, it fell by more than 60%.

CONSTRUCTION :

8.1% increase in the index of construction activity YOY and 5.1% compared to the previous quarter. The positive trend for the quarter is in line with the increase in the number of new buildings and progression recorded in the amount of imported cement.

INTERNAL TRADE :

Increase of 11.2% of the index of business activity YOY and 4.1% compared to last quarter. This quarterly growth in nominal value is due to almost all sub-sectors, including of food shops, of vehicles, of domestic appliances and construction materials rose respectively 3.9%, 1.8%, 3.0% and 17.4%.

CONSUMER PRICE :

Increase of 6.0% in the index of consumer prices YOY and 2.1% compared to the previous quarter. This quarterly growth in the price level is due to the behavior on the rise of all expenditure items including: Health (4.5%), clothing (2.9%), housing (2.5%), Food (2.2%), furniture (1.6%), transport (1.4%). The price index of agricultural products, on the other hand, increased by 8.8% YOY and 0.7% compared to the previous quarter.

FOREIGN TRADE :

4.8% increase in the index of the average value of imports YOY and a decrease of 0.7% compared to last quarter. Similarly, the index of the total value increased by 4.0% YOY and of 17.6% quarterly, which leads to a decline in the quantum of 0.7% YOY and a substantial increase of 18.4% compared to the previous quarter.
