Haiti - Economy : Slowdown in rising inflation

According to the report of the Haitian Institute of Statistics and Informatics (IHSI), the Index of Consumer Prices (IPC) [August 2004 = 100] increased to 204.1 in December, against 203.3 in November 2012, or an increase in inflation of 0.4% against 0.8% in November 2012. Despite the slowdown in inflation the latter in yoy is set at 7.6% in December against 7.5% the previous month.

This monthly variation in inflation in December was mainly attributable to the increase in the components "Food, drinks and tobacco" (+0.4%), "rental housing, energy and water" (+0.5%), "Development and Maintenance housing" (+0.5%), "Health" (+ 0.9%) and" Clothing and Textiles, Shoes" (+ 0.3%).

The increase in component "Food, drinks and tobacco" is attributable to higher rice prices (+0.7%), chicken (0.7%) of the lawyer (+6.3%), bananas (6.4%) of pumpkin (7.4%); green peas (+1.1%) yam (+0.5%), malanga (+1.1%), potato (+0.7%), the real tree (+1.2%), the orange (+2.5%) and lemon (+2.4%), while at the same time, there was a downward trend on : wheat flour, beef and pork meal, ground maize, edible oil and dry peas.

The increase in the index "rent housing, energy and water" is attributable to rental housing (+1.2%) and propane (+0.5%).

The increase in component "Clothing and Textiles, Shoes" is attributable to fabrics and petticoat (+0.7%), panty girdles (+3.7%), socks (+ 4.6%) and sandals (+1.6%).

The increase in component "Development, equipment and maintenance of housing" is due to the price of the refrigerator (+0.8%), craft stove (+4.5%), wages of domestic workers (+1.9%) and other services (+2.6%), while at the same time we recorded a decline in the price of salon furniture (-1.4%), the dining room (-1.3%), bed linen (-1.5%).

The increase in component "Health" is attributable to drugs (+1.6%), prescription glasses (+0.8%) and physician fees (+1.1%).

The South region [southern departments of Nippes and Grande'Anse] was the most affected by the increase in inflation (+0.6%).

The Northern Region [departments of North, Northeast and Northwest] comes in second position (+0.5%).

The metropolitan area [Port-au-Prince, Delmas, Petion-Ville, Carrefour and Croix-des-Bouquets and the region West remains which includes the departments of South-East and West] is in 3rd position (+0.3%).

The region transversal, which includes the departments of Artibonite and Centre, was the least affected with an increase in the inflation rate of +0.2%.
