Haiti - Culture : Mimi Barthélémy, 1939-2013

Mimi will no longer open her performances of stories, songs and theater telling us "Honor and Respect, Gentlemen Ladies the Society !"

Mimi Barthélémy, 74, died from a heart attack on Saturday morning. The Franco-Haitian storyteller was mainly worn by the scene where she was still playing there ten days ago "Le Code Noir et ses musiques" (The Black Code and its music) until the show was deprogrammed due to cardio-vascular accident.

Born in Port-au-Prince, May 3, 1939, she was educated in Haiti and France, holder of a doctorate in dramatic studies, in her life she has published many books, especially stories in French creolised created or worked from the Haitian traditions.

With more than twenty publication to his credit, mainly story books she published in 2011 his last two works, "Les perles de Zima" (The pearls of Zima) and "Contes d'Haïti" (Tales of Haiti), the latter consisting of four stories relate the adventures of tricky Malice and of Bouki, his friend a bit cheesy. In her stories, she weaves the two languages, French and Creole, in order to communicatewhat she received in sharing and to be a witness within the Francophonie. She also wrote plays and short stories.

During her theatrical career, of writer and storyteller, Mimi Barthélémy has received numerous honors in 1992 the Arletty Award of the Universality of the French Language ; in 1999 the Becker d'Or, at 3rd Festival de la Francophonie ; in 2000 Knight of the National Order of Merit ; in 2001 Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters and in 2011 Knight of the Legion of Honor.

Mimi will miss to the world stage where she valued, with talent in both languages ​​French and Haitian Creole, the imaginary that shines in Haitian culture.
