Haiti - Social : 20th anniversary of the World Day of Press Freedom

"Freedom of expression is a fundamental human right, enshrined in article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It is a cornerstone of good governance, sustainable development, and lasting peace and security. [...] This year, World Day of Press Freedom, held under the theme - Safe to Speak: Securing Freedom of Expression in All Media - (Chosen by UNESCO), highlights the need for action to upholding the right of journalists to carry out their vital work [...] from traditional media platforms such as radio, print and television, to newer and more and more popular social media, blogs and citizen-led reporting, journalists are increasingly at risk," declared Ban Ki-moon, Secretary General of the United Nations in his message to commemorate the World Day.

In this May 3, the 20th anniversary of the "World Day of Press Freedom" the President Michel Martelly, took the opportunity to present its warmest congratulations to press workers for their commitment to inform and educate the Haitian population "Freedom of the press is essential in building a democratic state. Recognizing this, my Administration strives tirelessly to facilitate the work of journalists and to ensure the proper functioning of the media. I remain convinced that freedom of expression promotes a better understanding of the realities and helps to better address certain issues of paramount interest for the population."

According to a report published on 30 January 2013 by Reporters Without Borders, Haiti occupies the 49th place out of 179 countries in the world, guaranteeing freedom of the press "Being on the list of top 50 countries that respect the most the independence of the press and freedom of expression is significant and encourages us to do more to allow members of this sector to continue to support the Haitian population," indicated the Head of State "In the Caribbean, we are in fourth place and will do our best to improve this score"
