Haiti - Environment : Bilateral agenda on the environment

The watershed protection and the massive reforestation along the border, are among the priority areas, of a common agenda that governments of Haiti and the Dominican Republic will implement.

Dr. Bautista Rojas Gomez, the Dominican Minister of Environment and Natural Resources, said that there is, among the Presidents Danilo Medina and Michel Martelly, a strong desire to promote environmental protection and use of natural resources along the border. Noting that "in the case of the border between the Dominican Republic and Haiti, given the fact that the two countries share the same island, what happens on one side has an impact on the other side," the Minister Rojas Gómez announced that the two heads of state will meet soon for provide an update on the environmental issues of the island.

The Minister Rojas Gomez, stated that his Ministry had about 2 million seedlings of various species for reforestation of the border. In the case of Haiti, the Dominican environmental authorities use endemic seedlings in the neighboring country "Also from the Dominican Republic, we will work with the Haitian people in technical assistance and the transfer of knowledge from our experiences in the environmental field."
