Haiti - Environment : Launch of the reforestation campaign of the island

This Wednesday, on the occasion of World Environment Day, whose theme this year is "Think-Eat-Save", the President Michel Martelly and his Dominican counterpart, Danilo Medina, will travel to the mid-day in Dosmond (Ouanaminthe) in the department of North-East, to jointly launch the campaign of reforestation of the island.

Reach to allow the two countries that share the island to recover their vegetation cover of yesteryear, so to protect themselves from the effects of deforestation and natural consequences caused by the degradation of the environment, that is the objective that governments Haitians and Dominicans have set through this initiative.

The two presidents, along with their respective delegations, will proceed to the symbolic planting of mahogany seedlings and will take the opportunity to visit the Seedling production center built through the efforts of the tripartite cooperation Cuba-Dominican Republic-Haiti. Then, the Presidents Martelly and Medina will visit the protection works of the city of Ouanaminthe against the floods of the Massacre River.

As part of the "Year of the Environment" declared by the President Joseph Michel Martelly, the Haitian government has established an ambitious plan of reforestation and land management in order to increase the vegetation cover and the integrated management of natural resources. In addition, the government plans to create community forests in order to increase between 2013 and 2020 forest cover of 27% and establish seedling multiplication centers in the 10 departments of the country, in order to achieve an nnual production capacity of 50 million seedlings.
