Haiti - Agriculture : First strategic reserve of agricultural storage

Thursday, Prime Minister, Laurent Lamothe proceeded in the locality of Lafiteau (Source Matelas) on the National #1, to the laying of the foundation stone for the construction of a major strategic reserve to store food in the fight against food insecurity and speculation on the agricultural market during periods of drought. The construction of this strategic reserve is funded to the tune of 3 million U.S. dollars, solely from funds Petrocaribe.

There is a storage complex composed of four large silos with a capacity of 2,500 metric tons each and a shed with a capacity of 25,000 metric tons, which will be built on an area of ​​5,400 m2. In this complex will be preserved grain varieties, food, fruits and seeds.

This initiative will also allow the administration Martelly to cope with possible drought and fight against the high cost of living consequence of the scarcity of agricultural products on the local market. Remember that every year farmers lose between 30% and 40% of their crops due to lack of storage space.

"The construction of this strategic reserve, reflects the desire of my Government to promote national agricultural production, stabilize the market price of essential commodities and combat food insecurity. Indeed, the fight against hunger and extreme poverty is the main pillars of government action," clarified the Prime Minister, who pointed out the various social programs in place to help the most vulnerable segments of the population, such as the National Social Assistance Plan "Ede Pèp"

The reserve of Lafiteau marks the beginning of a series of agricultural infrastructure to be built in all regions of the country, assured the Prime Minister, who announced the upcoming construction of two silos in the departments of North and South.

The Head of Government who promised the residents of Lafiteau of Community restaurants, spent instructions to Charles Jean-Jacques, the Minister of Social Affairs and Labour and Mimose Marie Felix, the Minister Delegate to the Prime Minister to promote the peasantry [who accompanied the Prime Minister] to follow on this issue.

Moreover, Laurent Lamothe, who reiterated the commitment of his Government to continue to work tirelessly to revive agriculture, asked Jacques Thomas, the Minister of Agriculture to work on an irrigation plan of arable land of the Source Matelas.
