Following the incident of Monday in Cap Haitien, where individuals have launched several tear gas in the lycées Philippe Guerrier and Jean-Baptiste Boukman, causing panic situations and wounded ; the Minustah and the agencies and programs of the United Nations in Haiti, expressed deep concern about these violent incidents.

In a note, Sandra Honoré, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General in Haiti says she received "the news of young students being victims of stone throwing and tear gas attack in Cap-Haïtien with concern. Individual recklessness of this sort is more than alarming since it threatens the security of all and, in the instant case, that of innocent young people.

We should all be worried by the rise of such violence in any society, and strongly reject it, on the basis of the respect for the rule of law, respect for others, tolerance, individual dignity and human rights.

Mob violence of the sort makes us reflect on the continual need to strengthen institutional structures and the rule of law for the benefit of the children and youth. It is very important that all people have the opportunity to voice their opinions freely without fear of reprisal or intimidation. However, this right must be exercised in a peaceful manner."

The UN urges all Haitians, civil society and on all key actors including political, religious and community leaders to continue working together towards the construction of a non-violent state in Haiti.
