Haiti - Environment : Signature of a Cooperation Agreement in the Forestry sector

Wednesday in Havana, was signed a Specific Agreement on Cooperation in the Forestry sector, between the Cuban Ministry of Agriculture and the Haitian Ministry of the Environment.

This agreement follows andiagnosis made by Cuban experts, after 4 months of investigation in Haiti (June 2013-October 2013), on the environmental problems of the country and the request sent by the Government of Haiti, during the recent visit of Estabane Lazo, President of Cuba's national Assembly and responsible for many years, of the management of the cooperation with Haiti.

The objective of the agreement is to contribute to the development of the forestry sector in Haiti through knowledge sharing, mentoring and technical assistance by professionals and Cuban technicians.

As part of its implementation, a score of Cuban professionals and technicians will provide assistance to the strengthening of the reforestation campaign in Haiti. They will make, with the support of their Haitian counterparts, a forest inventory, a plan of multiplication of nurseries across the country and a simplified management plan.

The technical assistance will also help the Haitian part to prepare the documents for obtaining legislative support [laws] and institutional essential to the success of the campaign of reforestation and of environmental education program designed to ensure the participation of new generations. Will also be established by both parties, a cartographic basis of forest areas and a management plan and of environmental inspection.

The 14-page document was initialed by Jean Francois Thomas, Haitian Minister of Environment and Ramon Frómeta Ordunez, Cuban Vice Minister of Agriculture.
