Haiti - Technology : Modernization of means of control at the airport of Cap Haitien

In order to meet international standards of trade exchanges, the Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Rural Development (MARNDR) installed at the airport Hugo Chavez of Cap Haitien an X-ray scanner at the arrival hall of the passenger and baggage.

This equipment will improve the performance of inspectors of the Health Protection Unit which includes several directions including the Quarantine. It will enable faster detection of agricultural products entering the country, which have no import permit, which may pose a threat through biological pests and exotic diseases.

This regular monitoring is intended to protect Haitian agriculture of sanitary risks that could have a negative impact on agricultural production, detrimental to the sector and all the Haitian economy. At a time when the agricultural sector is designated as the "locomotive of economic recovery", the equipment will also be at the disposal of Customs and the National Police of Haiti to help them in their fight against smuggling.

MARNDR continues to modernize the agricultural sector through its quarantine inspection services in ports and airports open to foreign trade. This initiative comes from the capacity building efforts by the State which benefits the support of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) and the Department of Agriculture for the United States (USDA) through the binational project of strengthening of International Quarantine, Republic of Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
