Thursday, the inauguration of the multimedia exhibition "Montréal-Haiti" was held t the Maison d'Haïti in the presence of several political personalities such as Frantz Benjamin, Anie Samson, Alexandre Boulerice and Nicola Di Iorio.

This multimedia exhibition presents 2 islands, 2 Histories, 1 Neighborhood (Saint-Michel) and is part of the activities of the 375th anniversary of Montreal and will be presented from October 6 to November 4, 2017 at the Maison d'Haïti located at 3245 Émile-Journault Avenue, Montreal. This exhibition traces, in contemporary art, the history of two islands; Montreal and Haiti.

The creators of the exhibition, Marie-Denise Douyon and Radu Juster, explore photography, painting, video and interactive installations, key moments of these two stories, their founding peoples and First Nations. Their creations challenge our identity visions on a personal level as well as on a collective and societal level, and particularly within the communities of Saint-Michel, a neighborhood with a high density of families of Haitian origin.

This exhibition is a sensory and visual experience, a unique journey of the first independent Black Nation: the Taino period, the Spanish conquest, French colonization, slavery, the revolt of Jean-Jacques Dessalines and Toussaint Louverture, independence , dictatorship and migratory flows to various receiving lands, including Montreal. It also aims to make a link between the historical context in America and that of the Haitian population. Indeed, several major events taking place in Haiti took place at the same time in Quebec: slavery, the situation of the indigenous population, French colonization, several historical facts unite Quebec and Haiti.
