Haiti - FLASH : The Consulate in Port-au-Prince no longer issues visas to Haitians for the Bahamas

Recall that currently Haitians need a visa to enter the territories of CARICOM (Antigua and Barbuda, the Bahamas, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Montserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago), at the exception of Barbados, which abolished the obligation in June 2018 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-24722-haiti-flash-barbados-abolished-visas-for-haitians.html

Since March 30, 2018, Haitians holding an official and diplomatic passport or holders of a US, Canadian or Schengen (European Union) visa can move freely in all Caricom member countries. This decision is made pending action in the future to allow free movement of people and goods throughout the Caribbean.

However, for some time, because of the formalities required, the Consulate of the Bahamas in Port-au-Prince no longer issues visas to Haitians. In an attempt to find a solution to this situation, a delegation of the Embassy of Haiti in Nassau (Bahamas) met at the beginning of the week the Head of Consular Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Bahamas to discuss the formalities that a Haitian citizen must complete to obtain a visa in order to legally enter the Bahamas. Both parties promised to work together in the interest of both nations.

It should be noted that the Bahamian Government, known for its severe repression against Haitians in irregular migration situation, much stricter than in the Dominican Republic, tries by all means to reduce the number of illegal in its territory. According to estimates, nearly 70,000 Haitians (18% of the Bahamian population in 2014) lived in the Bahamas, of which 20,000 to 50,000 would be illegal, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM). In November 2017, it was estimated that the number of Haitian migrants present on the soil of the Bahamas to more than 80,000 people...
