The Jesuit Service for Migrants / Solidarite "Fwontalye-Haiti" and the European Union launched in Ouanaminthe on December 13, the binational project "Ann leve kanpe pou dwa yo respekte", aimed at combating forced labor in the North , North-East Haiti and the Dominican Republic in the agricultural sector.

With a duration of 30 months, this project funded by the European Union to the tune of one million Euros, aims to support the Civil Society in its actions to protect vulnerable groups such as migrant workers, victims of forced labor.

More than 2,500 migrants will benefit from training activities and 500 from support for obtaining identity documents. A study will be conducted to better understand the problem of forced labor and identify measures to curb it. Workers will receive economic support.

Vincent Degert, the EU Ambassador present at this launch, declared "Our goal is, on the one hand, to supervise Haitian workers and organizations in this sector so that they can better identify and defend cases of violation caused often by the victim's ignorance of his rights. On the other hand, to work with private sector companies and public sector actors on the Haitian and Dominican side, so that they are aware of this issue and can deal with violations and expand human rights protections," adding "Forced labor at the border and the issue of migration must be linked to socio-economic conditions that must also be addressed and bring structural responses from the Haitian State."
