Reopening of a CTC

Yesterday the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has announced the reopening of a Cholera Treatment Center (CTC) in Carrefour Feuilles. According to Gerhard Tauscher, Operations Coordinator of cholera of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) "The Red Cross has intensified its work of prevention of cholera for several months in anticipation of the rainy season [...] But with more patients requiring urgent treatment, we must now re-opened a cholera treatment center in Port-au-Prince." adding that "make sure people are aware of the increased risk, and the simple steps to prevent the spread of disease is essential."

2000 patients treated in one week

For his part Gitenet Roman, head of mission of Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) declared "Since May 29, in one week, MSF has treated almost 2,000 patients in the capital, and we have also been asked to intervene in other areas in the interior of the country" adding that "the vigilance is still the best protection. People must be strict about their hygiene and drink treated water" "As soon the first symptoms, it is vital to go as quickly as possible to a CTC..." he added.

Petit-Goâve is not spared

Guyto Mathieu, Director of Radio Preference FM in Petit-Goâve informs us that "The communal sections of Petit-Goâve are not spared by the resurgence of cholera throughout the country, Indeed, the 10th and 9th communal sections of the Palmes of Petit-Goâve are severely affected by cholera... only for these two sections, we recorded more than 15 deaths, over 190 peasants are infected" adding that by fear "Some residents of Palms including children fleeing the area... Many took refuge in downtown of Petit Goâve by fear of being the next victims..." indicating that "other communal sections, such as Vialet, Deuxième Plaine, Gira, Bezace are also affected by the cholera epidemic... Rain falling right now on the Goâvienne region will only help the spread of the disease."

Finally Mr. Mathieu calls for assistance to concerned authority "t would be necessary that the central authorities act quickly in favor of the poor peasants of Petit-Goâve by opening CTCs in the localities affected... The Hospital Notre-Dame de Petit-Goâve has already received several cases of cholera..."

The figures of MSPP

Between May 22 and May 29, 2584 people have been hospitalized according to figures from the Ministry of Public Health and Population (MSPP)

Last cholera assessment : since the beginning of the cholera epidemic in Haiti (October 19, 2010), 321.066 people were infected and treated, 171.076 people were hospitalized and 5.337 people died. According to the latest report from the Ministry of Public Health and Population (MSPP) [figures undervalued according to UN experts], dated of May 29, 2011.
