Hospitals in the capital, Port-au-Prince, and other cities in the country report extremely low reserves of fuel needed to power the generators that keep their services running.

In addition to the insecurity that prevents their employees from going to their posts, the oxygen shortage that paralyzes their services, these hospitals fear as of this week the gradual or total closure of their services to the population for lack of fuel.

"Lives are likely to be lost in Haiti if fuel deliveries do not reach hospitals immediately" said Pierre Honnorat, Interim United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator in Haiti

In a note, the organization Nos Petits Frères et Sœurs and the St Luc Foundation (FSL) inform that, "faced with the situation of fuel shortage resulting from the deleterious security conditions across the capital, the power station that supplies St Damien and St Luc hospitals has only 6,000 gallons of Diesel in reserve.

Therefore, if no delivery of Diesel is guaranteed as soon as possible (16,000 gallons are expected), pediatric services, for more than 300 children, of maternity to more than 45 women, urgent care and hospitalization for more than 70 adults including, trauma care will be interrupted for lack of fuel on Tuesday, October 26, 2021"

Remember that St Luc and St Damien Hospitals are two of the rare hospitals still providing care accessible to all against the 4th wave of Covid-19 in progress.

The NPH organization and the St Luc Foundation are calling on "State Authorities and the Private Sector to quickly facilitate a fuel delivery corridor not only to St Damien and St Luc Hospitals, but also to all hospitals affected by that persistent fuel supply crisis."
