Haiti - 219th anniversary : The PM at the foot of Toussaint Louverture

Thursday, April 7, as part of the 219th anniversary of the death of Toussaint Louverture (April 7, 1803) Prime Minister a.i. Ariel Henry accompanied by the Ministers Mrs. Emmelie Prophet Milcé (Culture), Enold Joseph (Defence), Liszt Quitel (Interior), of the Commander of the Armed Forces of Haiti, (FAd'H) Lieutenant-General Jodel Lessage and the Commander-in-Chief of the National Police of Haiti Frantz Elbé gathered at the foot of the Monument dedicated to the memory of Toussaint, figure emblematic of the fight for black freedom, and proceeded to place a floral offering at the foot of the statue.

Fad'H soldiers were present to pay solemn tribute to the precursor of Haiti's independence.

Toussaint Louverture in a few key dates :

  • On May 20, 1743, he was born on the Bréda estate;

  • In 1776, he was freed by his Master, the Count of Noah;

  • He would have participated, in August 1791, in the general uprising of the slaves;

  • In June 1793, he joined the Spanish army;

  • He joined the French Army in May 1794;

  • In 1798, he ousted Hédouville, the representative of the Directory;

  • He proclaimed his constitution in 1801;

  • On June 7, 1802, he was taken prisoner. He died at Fort de Joux on April 7, 1803

  • On April 7, 1983, he entered the Haitian National Pantheon, alongside Dessalines, Christophe and Pétion.
