In April 2022, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Haiti provided reception and post-arrival assistance to 2,923 migrant adults and children repatriated to Haiti by air and sea in Port-au-Prince and Cap-Haitien.

This is in addition to nearly 20,000 migrants returned and assisted in 2021. As in 2021 and the previous March 2022, the vast majority of migrants returned in April 2022 were returned by air from the United States, while more small proportions were returned from other countries and territories in the region. A small number of migrants have been returned after being intercepted at sea by the US Coast Guard.

Most returning migrants assisted by IOM previously resided in Chile or Brazil, where several returnee children were born and returned by the United States after traveling north.

Smaller proportions of returnees have migrated more recently, particularly through the Caribbean sea routes. Those who left Haiti more recently report leaving due to a combination of factors, including lack of income and employment opportunities, insufficient access to basic services, the impact of natural disasters (including the earthquake of August 14, 2021, which strongly affected the southern departments of Haiti), violence and insecurity, political instability and others...

A total of 21,380 Haitians were deported from the United States between September 19, 2021 and April 2022.

IOM assistance consisted of:

• Food and beverages during the registration process;

• 75 US dollars cash per boat returnee (unconditional);

• 100 - 120 US dollars cash per air repatriate (unconditional);

• One hygiene kit per person, including dignity items and baby items;

• Telephones available to contact relatives on arrival;

• First aid and referral for medical assistance;

• Psychological support and counseling services;

• Family reunification of unaccompanied minors in collaboration with the Institute of Social Welfare and Research (IBESR);

• Possibility to consult a legal intern.
