Mango volumes from Haiti, one of the leading producers of Francisque mangoes in the Caribbean and Central America, are expected to be 48% lower than last year.

The Francisque mango, very fleshy, low in fiber and tasty, is by far the most exported mango in Haiti to the American continent. Its qualities make this the most expensive mango in the United States. The other reason relates to the phytosanitary standards of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) which requires that mangoes be immersed in hot water for 60 to 90 minutes, in order to eliminate all the larvae of flies as part of the fight against the threat of the Mediterranean fruit fly. Only the Francisque mango can withstand such treatment.

The Haitian mango season started the third week of April and is expected to continue until the second week of September with an export estimate for 2022 of around 1.4 million boxes, which is ±48% less than the previous year.

This decrease is mainly attributable to the insecurity situation in Haiti, the difficulties of moving and transporting the fruit in the country, the shortage of fuel which sees the price of the latter on the black market soar to heights never reached and to the international crisis...
