Haiti - Education : 20% of Haitian children under 11 do not go to school

The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) is encouraging Haitian parents to take their children to school after pointing out that 20% of Haitian children under the age of 11 do not attend primary school.

UNICEF points out that in Haiti the literacy rate is 61% higher among men than among women...

According to the UN agency in Haiti, 24% of men and 17% of women have never been to school, and the agency is working with the Ministry of National Education to improve the access to inclusive education for children.

Earlier this year, the Latin American Campaign for the Right to Education (REPT) and the Haitian Group for Education for All (CLADE) stated that the increase in the proportion of students in the sector public, at least 60%, would improve the figures in the future.

Despite the fact that education is a right in Haiti, nearly 90% of schools are private, with prices too high for the population.

In this context, REPT, CLADE and other local organizations are urging the Government to draw up public and community policies which, in the short, medium and long term, make it possible to remedy the various failures of the system and lead it to take a qualitative shift and public, inclusive and non-discriminatory education.
