Haiti - Gonaïves : Protesters loot Caritas and WFP warehouses

Thursday morning in Gonaïves (Dept. Artibonite), 3rd day of protest against the increase in the prices of petroleum products, high prices and the Prime Minister among others https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-37648-haiti-flash-the-new-fuel-prices-are-in-effect-anger-is-growing.html , demonstrators attacked and looted a warehouse of the international Catholic NGO Caritas, located behind the bishopric of the city and took everything (among other things : beans, bags of rice, cooking oil as well as mattresses, beds and computer equipment.)

After the Caritas looting scene towards the middle of the day the population attacked and looted depots of the World Food Program (WFP), the largest humanitarian organization in the world.

The interventions of the security forces who made great use of tear gas to try to disperse the demonstrators did not prevent the looters from seizing food supplies in a wild frenzy.

In a note, the World Food Program (WFP) of the United Nations confirms that a warehouse in Gonaïves, Haiti, was looted and that adjacent offices were set on fire specifying "The warehouse contained 1,400 metric tons of food intended for school meal programs and to Haiti's most vulnerable families and children. The personnel of the organization have been taken care of and are safe [...]"

"This incident is simply unacceptable. The looted food was intended to feed nearly 100,000 school children until the end of the year and to provide emergency aid to the most vulnerable families in Haiti" lamented Jean-Martin Bauer , Director of WFP in Haiti who recalled "WFP is in Haiti to support vulnerable communities with urgent needs, while strengthening local production and livelihoods through our long-term resilience initiatives."
