Haiti - FLASH : The American Embassy recommends to its citizens to leave Haiti

"The U.S. Embassy in Port-au-Prince reminds U.S. citizens that Haiti has the highest level of travel advisories (Level 4: Do Not Travel).

Due to the high levels of insecurity in Haiti, the U.S. Embassy in Port-au-Prince in a note recommends its citizens "not travel" to Haiti and "U.S. citizens in Haiti should seriously consider to return to the United States.

In the note, the Embassy recalls that "continuing insecurity and growing fuel shortages are hampering the ability of American citizens to find transportation to and from the Embassy and airports nationwide."

The Embassy points out that the US government "has an extremely limited capacity to provide emergency services to US citizens" in Haiti and that in any event, it cannot provide transportation services.

She also points out that Haitian police "lack the resources to effectively respond to requests for assistance" and that U.S. citizens should carefully consider the risks of traveling to or staying in Haiti in "light of deteriorating conditions."

The U.S. Embassy in Port-au-Prince provides emergency assistance at: +509-2229-8000 and non-emergency requests can be made by email: acspap@state.gov
