Commemoration of the Marchaterre massacre

Several activities, including a Requiem mass and exhibitions of local products, were organized on Tuesday to mark the 93 years of the Marchaterre massacre in Les Cayes (December 6, 1929) perpetrated by United States Marine Corps troops who cowardly fired at Haitian peasants who were demonstrating peacefully against the American occupation. Balance sheet between 12 and 22 dead and between 20 and 51 injured.

83.5% of detainees in Haiti have never been tried

The latest report from the Directorate of Penitentiary Administration (DAP) reveals that in August 2022, 83.5% of detainees had been in prolonged preventive detention in Haiti, sometimes for many years and had never appeared before a judge. Out of a total of 11,718 detainees, only 1,935 have been tried and sentenced.
