Haiti - Ottawa : Participation of PM Henry in the first Canada-Caricom summit

Tuesday October 17, 2023, Prime Minister a.i. Ariel Henry, accompanied, among others, by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jean Victor Généus and a member of the High Council of the Transition, left Haiti for Ottawa where he will participate, on October 17, 18 and 19, at the first Canada-Caricom summit around the theme “Strategic Partners for a Resilient Future”

During this summit co-chaired by the Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, and his counterpart from Dominica, Roosevelt Skerrit, current President a.i. of Caricom, the leaders of the Caribbean States will address the problems of the sub-region of the America, the issue of regional security will be addressed with the main subject being the situation prevailing in Haiti and the sending of the Multinational Security Support Mission in Haiti.

If this first meeting will allow Canada to strengthen its relations with the countries of the Caribbean, it is above all the situation in Haiti which will be the backdrop for this summit.

Trudeau, according to a CARICOM press release, should emphasize at this summit the importance of strengthening democratic values, promoting human rights and international order, as well as strengthening coordination in regional security matters, particularly by responding to ongoing security, political and humanitarian crises in Haiti.

In the absence of the Prime Minister, the interim in Haiti is provided by Alex Larsen, the Minister of Public Health.
