Haiti - Politic : Former President Privert «deeply concerned» about insecurity in the country

Monday January 21, 2024, in a note, former President Jocelerme Privert, expressed his "deepest concern about the constant deterioration of the security situation in the country" emphasizing that the population "[...] in different regions of the country, do not stop living in worry and fear of the terror of armed gangs who kill, rape, steal and kidnap all day long in the complicit silence of the authorities."

"[...] The metropolitan region of Port-au-Prince, from north to south, is completely cut off from the rest of the country. People in disadvantaged neighborhoods are forced to flee their homes to settle in public squares, in schools or in precarious shelters. [...]

The ordeal of members of the population living in working-class neighborhoods such as Solino, La Saline, Bel-Air, Cité Soleil, Carrefour-Feuilles, Canaan, Mariani, etc... who run in all directions to escape the fury of the bandits armed [...] These public calamities are a source of major concern. It is untenable and unacceptable and must challenge us all.

"Former President Privert has, once again, drawn the attention of the national security forces to the urgent need for an appropriate and urgent response to this situation which can no longer continue.

This spate of violence which bereaves Haitian families every day in all sectors of national life must be their priority. The very survival of our Nation is at stake !

Former President Privert urges, once again, the established authorities to assume their responsibilities by doing everything possible to definitively alleviate this situation of chronic instability preventing peaceful citizens from going about their business freely and without constraints."
