Haiti - FLASH : High-level meeting on the crisis in Haiti on the sidelines of the G-20

The deployment in Haiti of the Multinational Mission to Support the National Police of Haiti (PNH) in the fight against gangs led by Kenya will be discussed during a high-level meeting, on the sidelines of the gathering of foreign ministers of the 20 richest countries in the world (G20) in Rio de Janeiro Brazil (February 21-22, 2024)

On Wednesday, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, during a two-hour meeting with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in the capital Brasilia, requested aid for Haiti.

Let's recall that Brazil led the last United Nations peacekeeping mission in Haiti, and Haitians and other countries are waiting to see if the South American nation will again volunteer to help...

Lula said Haiti's problems extend beyond security and that until now he and other South American leaders have been reluctant to offer police or military volunteers for a (non-UN) mission. ) multinational security support to the Haitian National Police (PNH) which will be led by Kenya.

Nevertheless, Brazil joins the UN and the United States to organize this Thursday a high-level discussion on the sidelines of the G20 ministerial meeting entitled "Meeting the Challenge in Haiti" whose objective is to galvanize supporting both the multinational security support mission and the dire humanitarian situation.

A senior Biden administration official said the latest estimate from the Office of Management and Budget puts the cost of the mission at $515 million to $600 million over two years. But he stressed that the precise cost depends on final operational plans and needs on the ground. The mission also needs equipment and perhaps additional men. For now, the mission is expected to include 2,500 troops from Kenya, Jamaica, the Bahamas and other countries in the Caribbean and Africa.
