Haiti - Retreat : Restitution of France's debt and Reparations

The National Committee on Restitution and Reparations, for its first retreat (October 17 to 20), takes stock of the work and reflections on reparations and the restitution of France's debt, started since the creation of the Committee in May 2024 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-42325-haiti-flash-the-ueh-will-work-on-the-restitution-by-france-of-the-independence-debt.html

This retreat mobilizes experts and scientists from the committee, from various fields, as well as some representatives of the national and international communities to support the demands for reparation and restitution. The Committee will strive to bring together the most relevant arguments and put forward concrete solutions, taking into account historical, economic and legal realities.

This retreat represents a crucial step in the advancement of reparation demands for Haiti. By adopting a multidisciplinary approach, it highlights the importance of a framework that includes history, economics, law, anthropology and sociology, international relations, communication and public health. At the end of this retreat, a roadmap with a work schedule will be finalized based on the priorities identified

On the agenda for this retreat :

• History of extortion in Haiti : Dr. Jean Marie Théodat and Dr. Alvarez Louis;

• Communication and community mobilization Prof. Bildadson Cadelus, PhD student;

• Memory of slavery and Haitian thought : Dr. Jhon Picard Byron, Prof. Evelyne Trouillot;

• Economics and development deficit : Dr. Eddy Labessière and Ms. Régine Barjon;

• Public health approach to historical trauma and reparations in Haiti : Judite Blanc and Ernest Barthélémy;

• History of international relations and reparations : Dr. Glodel Mezilas, and Prof. Christian Toussaint;

• Legal foundations of reparations claims : Me Jacques Letang and Me Gregory Charles Pierre;

• Several external speakers to the Committee : Pierre Antoine Louis, career diplomat; Harold Eustache, Attorney at the Maryland Bar; Brian Concannon, Human Rights Attorney; Profs. Ellie Happel and Sienna Merope-Sungue of the Law Clinic of the City University of New York.
