Haiti - Tourism : BRH open to supporting the tourism industry

On Tuesday, November 5, 2024, James Monazard, the Minister of Tourism, met with Ronald Gabriel, Governor of the Bank of the Republic of Haiti (BRH), to discuss important support measures for businesses in the tourism sector.

The objective of this meeting was to strengthen the financial support of the BRH for stakeholders in the tourism industry, particularly affected by the current economic crisis.

During this meeting, several initiatives were proposed to alleviate the difficulties of tourism businesses. Minister Monazard advocated for an extension of existing benefits to all tourism sub-sectors, including accommodation, transportation, catering, events and guiding. He also requested concrete measures, such as an extended moratorium on loans and a reduction in interest rates to ease the financial burden on businesses.

The Governor of the BRH was in favor of this approach and expressed the institution's willingness to adapt its support to the specific needs of the tourism sector.

Among the commitments made by the BRH, we note the study of an extension of the benefits of Circular No. 09-1 to other sub-sectors, as well as the renewal of a moratorium on loans until September 2025 to allow businesses to regain stability.

The two men agreed on the importance of a concerted approach to revive the tourism sector in a sustainable manner. This collaboration between the Ministry of Tourism and the BRH marks a decisive step towards the economic recovery of tourism businesses in Haiti, by promoting more favorable financial conditions and supporting the resilience of the sector.
