Haiti - Politic : A new blow to feminist struggles

The feminists who signed this note have taken note of the appointment of Ms. Pédrica Saint-Jean to head the Ministry for the Status of Women and Women's Rights (MCFDF).

In a note, they believe that "this emblematic and strategic Ministry for the advancement of women's rights is treated by the power in place as a position of convenience, without regard for the institutional mission."

They criticize that the appointment of the Minister is based on "political connections and not on skills and proven commitments to the cause of women."

For these feminists, "This appointment reflects a repeated desire to neutralize the political impact of the Ministry and to make it a ministry without a line of defense for the rights of half of Haiti's population..."

"The Transitional Council has nevertheless chosen to appoint as Minister a person whose probity has been called into question. Such a decision, on the one hand, reinforces the many questions about the governance of the CPT in terms of the integrity of decision-making processes and, on the other hand, demonstrates the CPT's condescension with regard to this conquest of feminists that constitutes the creation of an institution responsible for taking into account gender relations.

"In the current context, where women and girls are particularly subject to violence, rewarding unethical behavior is to endorse the abuses according to which the occupation of a position of power is not subject to respect for principles.

"We, the signatory feminists, reiterate our firm attachment to the values of integrity, solidarity and social justice. Faced with repeated attacks on our rights and our institutions, we will not remain silent."

Signatories : "Fanm Desid e", TOYA Foundation, "Kay Fanm", "Nègès Mawon", Feminist Organization MARIJÀN, "100 % Fanm", Movement for the Integration and Emancipation of Disabled Women (MIEFH), Combite Résistance Féministe (COREF).
