Haiti - 221st Anniversary of Independence : Official Ceremony (Videos)

Wednesday, January 1st, 2025, celebration of the 221st anniversary of Haiti's independence, Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé participated in the ceremony "in memory of the Founding Fathers, to the determined women and men who won freedom at the cost of immense sacrifices, making Haiti the first independent black State."

Alongside State representatives, the Prime Minister with Leslie Voltaire, President pro tempore of the Transitional Council, reaffirmed the commitment to work in a spirit of solidarity and national unity "This solemn day recalls the heroism and greatness of the Haitian people. More than ever, it is essential to overcome our divisions and come together faced the current challenges, including insecurity, which threatens social peace and the future of the Nation.

Restoring security, relaunching development and guaranteeing free, transparent and democratic elections are essential priorities for building a dignified and prosperous future for every citizen."

In his speech to the Nation, Leslie Voltaire, President pro tempore of the Transitional Council, did not fail to recall "[...] that France extorted a ransom from Haiti for its independence. This historical injustice has slowed our development and remains a raw wound. Today, Haiti demands justice : restitution of this ransom and reparation for the wrongs caused by slavery, a crime against humanity."

Concerning the general elections, Voltaire has no doubt that they will take place this year, stating "[...] the elections will take place, whatever the cost, by the end of the year. The time for patience is over. We must pacify the country to allow the referendum and guarantee the future of our democracy [...]

"[...] The tragic toll of the year 2024 weighs heavily on our Nation : more than 5,000 of our brothers and sisters have been brutally murdered [...] This reality reminds us that we are at war. A relentless war that we will continue in 2025 against these gangs that sow death, terror, rape, pillage, victimizing a peaceful population. The entire Presidential Transitional Council, the Prime Minister and the entire Government are united in this fight. Our commitment is total : to bring security and dignity to every Haitian. Victory is our only goal [...] »
